Harry Wilson's play of the day at Kempton
Lir Speciale
As an avid follower of all-weather racing, I'm always on the lookout for horses who have shown their best form on an artificial surface and are returning to the synthetics off falling marks after, usually, largely disappointing on turf subsequently.
There are three who fit that criteria at Kempton in the evening, with Lir Speciale the best bet of the day in the 7f handicap (6.30).
The five-year-old hasn't managed to trouble the judge in four turf starts since switching to Stuart Williams from Roger Varian, but the first three came over a trips short of his best, and in better-class races, and he showed a lot more returned to 7f last time.
He probably wasn't helped by racing up the centre of the track that day, considering the class-dropping winner and runner-up raced near side, but found plenty for pressure to be beaten little more than two lengths.
That provided plenty of encouragement that his turn is near and he is of huge interest now returning to Kempton, where he has form figures 2311 – the two wins coming over 7f.
He's 5lb lower than the second of those wins, while both successes were achieved on going described as standard to slow, which he gets here. If making full use of stall two and adopting a prominent position, it will take a very good one to beat him.
