Harry Wilson's play of the day at Beverley

Giorgio M

2.47 Beverley
2pts win

George Boughey is a trainer to take note of when sending runners north from his Newmarket base and there are several reasons to think Giorgio M can win the 7½f handicap at Beverley.

The East Yorkshire venue has been a happy hunting ground for Boughey, who has saddled nine winners from his 38 runners there (24 per cent strike-rate), with a further eight coming home in second.

That statistic gets even better when dealing with three-year-olds, the age of Giorgio M, as Boughey is 5-13 (38 per cent) with runners of that age group at Beverley.

The trainer is also in great form, with a double at Pontefract on Sunday following success at Royal Ascot, taking his strike-rate to 29 per cent (15-51) in the last fortnight.

The trainer is only one part of the equation, though. Giorgio M was given a 135-day break, wind surgery and gelded after failing to get off the mark in five starts on the all-weather, but has shown much better form since tackling turf.

He looked to improve for the step up in trip when getting off the mark in a 7f handicap at Musselburgh last month and a return to that distance looked needed at Newmarket last time, when he rallied after looking outpaced to go down by just a length to the speedy Mart.

A 1lb rise for that seems very lenient, given that rival won his next start off a 4lb higher mark, and this trip looks ideal, while the exploits of Billy Loughnane, who has ridden him the last two times, need no introduction. He is a strong selection to make the 314-mile round trip worthwhile.
