Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Thirsk

Deputy betting editor

Summerghand

4.55 Thirsk

There aren’t many more popular horses in training than Summerghand and the ten-year-old has a good chance to land an 18th career win in the 6f handicap (4.55) at Thirsk.

The David O’Meara-trained gelding has dropped to a mark 11lb lower than when recording his last win at York in August last year and hasn’t been running badly in defeat this season.

He was beaten only a length and three-quarters in a hot 6f handicap at Newmarket in April and put a couple of below-par runs behind him when a running-on seventh back at that track the following month. He finished only two and three-quarter lengths behind the winner there.

He is now 2lb lower following a heavy defeat in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot last time, but he beat nine others who were in his group that day and won the race in the centre. That proves Summerghand is still on good terms with himself and this is a much easier task.

He drops back a furlong in trip and all his wins have come at this 6f distance, so I will be surprised if he isn’t too good for Class 3 rivals. He has three wins from four in the grade.
