Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Nottingham
Qirat
2.08 Nottingham
2pts win
We might be firmly into the jumps season, but the best action on Wednesday comes on the Flat at Nottingham, where the Listed Robin Hood Stakes (2.08) over 1m½f is a cracker.
Grey’s Monument will be popular after back-to-back wins at Ascot and Redcar, but I have little doubt that his Ralph Beckett-trained stablemate Qirat is a better bet for Hector Crouch.
The fact stable jockey Rossa Ryan rides Grey’s Monument probably isn’t significant as Crouch has partnered Qirat in six of his eight starts, but Qirat has the greater potential anyway.
Qirat has recorded back-to-back career-best Racing Post Ratings over 7f on his last two starts and followed a win in a handicap at Goodwood with an eyecatching second at Ascot this month.
He became badly outpaced at a crucial stage on that occasion, but rallied strongly to put in a power-packed finish to take a clear second behind wide-margin winner Volterra. Carrytheone, who was sixth that day, franked the form by taking the Balmoral Handicap on Champions Day at Ascot next time.
Qirat’s strong finish gave the impression he will be better at further, and the extra furlong and a half can bring the progress needed from this half-brother to Arc heroine Bluestocking.
