Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Newmarket
Abate
Adrian Nicholls has his string in superb form and Tees Spirit blitzed his rivals in the 5f handicap on Tuesday. The trainer told Lydia Hislop on Racing TV afterwards that Abate has been working with Tees Spirit at home, so it’s worth backing him in the 6f handicap (1.50).
Abate has a similar style of racing to Tees Spirit in that he will be jumping out and attempting to make all, as he did four times under Mia Nicholls last season. He gets on well with her.
The eight-year-old's last win came over course and distance in September, a race from which the second, fourth, sixth and seventh have won six times between them since, and Abate is only 3lb higher.
He nearly won again himself on his next start at Ripon that month, losing out by just a head in second, and that proved he remains in the form of his life.
A 1lb rise in the weights demands more, but Tees Spirit won off a mark of 91 yesterday and Abate is off 85 here. He is therefore still well handicapped compared to his work companion.
