Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Newbury
Cristo
2.55 Newbury
Richard Hannon has won five of the last nine runnings of the 7f nursery (2.55) and that makes his sole runner in the race this year, Cristo, well worth a second look.
The son of Havana Grey has twice caught my eye at Kempton this season. He was beaten only three lengths into sixth in a novice there in August and stepped up on that run last time.
Cristo was making his nursery debut on that occasion and having his first start at a mile, but caught the eye with good headway to do clearly best of those who came from the back in a race which was dominated by prominent runners. He was beaten only a length and a half.
The drop back to 7f here is less of a concern than the return to turf and he needs to prove he can repeat his Kempton form on this surface and up a straight track. But all four of his half-siblings handled turf and this track should suit waiting tactics, so he is worth a chance.
Sean Levey also takes over from Liam Keniry and that is definitely a positive in the saddle.
