Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Kempton

Apeeling

8.30 Kempton

Apeeling is strongly fancied to bounce back from a disappointing run when favourite at Chepstow three weeks ago in the 6f handicap (8.30).

The Andrew Balding-trained filly beat only one home in that 5f Racing League handicap, but everything went wrong. Heavy rain turned the ground against her and the trainer’s representative reported after the race that Apeeling had also failed to handle the undulations.

That evidently wasn’t her true form and a line can be put through the run, so she is better judged on her previous third in a fillies’ handicap over 5f at Ascot at the end of last month.

Apeeling came up against her elders that day and was beaten only a length and a quarter by subsequent winner Alcazan. The fifth, Boadicia, has also franked the form by scoring since.

The selection is able to race off a 1lb lower mark back against her own age group and the return to 6f looks certain to suit. Her sole victory came over this distance at Windsor in June and all her siblings and half-siblings showed their best form over 6f to 7f.

There is also encouragement to be taken from her pedigree for this switch to Polytrack. Her sister, Orange Blossom, recorded her only success at this course and that suggests Apeeling will be well suited by moving over to this surface now she makes her all-weather debut.
