Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Brighton
Nelson Rose
The bet of the day runs at Brighton in the 6f handicap (2.55), where Nelson Rose is strongly fancied to land a first victory for trainer Adam West and jockey Jason Watson. The pair have teamed up for three seconds from just seven runners together and can also get an overdue win.
One of those seconds was achieved by Nelson Rose, when she finished runner-up in a 7f handicap under Watson at Chepstow in June, and the front two pulled five and a half lengths clear of the remainder of the field. She was dropped 1lb in the weights for a solid effort there.
The three-year-old went off a well-backed 7-2 favourite to go one better at Epsom three weeks ago and got closer to winning, losing out by two lengths despite finishing only fourth.
Nelson Rose did well to stick with the leaders that day as she helped set a strong pace alongside Bated Breeze, who dropped away to finish ninth, leaving my selection to come home the best of the prominent runners. It was a super effort as she did too much too soon.
She races off the same mark and might hold a class edge now down in grade into a 0-55, especially as dropping to 6f for the first time in a handicap looks certain to suit. West’s runners tend to show their best form over sprint trips and Nelson Rose has plenty of speed.
