Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Bath

Miss Gitana

4.30 Bath

The ground won’t be quite as soft at Bath and that makes Miss Gitana worth backing in the 1m6f handicap (4.30) for Sir Mark Prescott and Shane Kelly. He doesn’t ride many for the yard, but is 3-11 (27 per cent) when teaming up with the red-hot trainer in the last five years.

Miss Gitana is by top sire Nathaniel and out of the 105-rated dam Miss Celestial, so is bred to be a lot better than her current mark of 67 and, like many from the Prescott yard, she has improved significantly for stepping up in trip this season. She should have lots more to offer.

She started the season with a staying-on fourth over 1m2f at Yarmouth and followed that with two good seconds in 1m4f handicaps at Beverley. However, it was the step up to 1m6½f that brought her a first victory at Doncaster last month, when she was no stronger than at the finish.

There was just a head between the first three home and the second and third have let the form down with heavy defeats since, but Miss Gitana appeared to be doing only just enough to get the job done and her narrow margin of success means she is up just 2lb in the handicap.

That could seriously underestimate her and Prescott won this race last year with Trooper Bisdee. He was racing off a perch of just 59, but now has a BHA mark of 92, and it will be surprising if Miss Gitana isn’t rated a lot higher than her current figure in 12 months as well.
