A 58-year-old punter from Greater Manchester who took William Hill for a mammoth £281,000 from just a £7 stake at Southwell on Tuesday could be set to own a racehorse of his own following his big win.

The customer had placed a series of 10p multiple bets totalling £7 on seven horses running at the Midlands track and, despite having three losers, went on to land a massive payout due to the lengthy odds of his four winners.

The 13-year-old Tiquer got the ball rolling with a 25-1 triumph before Schiaparannie followed up in the next at 8-1, a shrewd pick given the Jane Makin-trained nine-year-old went off at 11-4.

The punter may have thought his luck was running out when Silver Star (100-1) and Stunsail (25-1) were beaten in the next two, only for Alchemystique to stun at odds of 150-1 (SP 125-1) in the 2m maiden hurdle.

Radetzky March finished last in the next but the afternoon ended on a scarcely believable high when Irish Sovereign – who had been beaten a combined 237 lengths in his five previous starts – swept to victory under Nick Scholfield in the last at odds of 66-1 (SP 50-1).

A father of two, the punter said: "I had no idea they would be such big odds! I scanned through the racecards, picked out a few fancies and placed some fun multiples for the day."

Having pocketed a healthy £281,246.23p, the punter now plans to venture into racehorse ownership, but not before a well-deserved dream holiday with his wife.

He added: "I've always said that if I were to win big then I'd like to invest in a proper racehorse, so now's my chance. I'd like a nice jumps horse, maybe in training with Donald McCain as he's quite local, and the next dream would be to win the Grand National.

"My wife and I are also hoping to go to New Zealand and spend some time touring the country, a trip we've always spoken about doing."

Despite losing a hefty sum, William Hill were pleased for the lucky customer and his family.

Spokesman Rupert Adams said: "It's remarkable that he's not managed to pick just one or two big odds winners, but four, including a 150-1 shot and a 66-1 shot.

"He said he didn't pay much attention to the prices when placing the bet, which is probably a good thing as he might have been put off!

"We're delighted for him and the family. It sounds as though they'll enjoy the money with a dream holiday to New Zealand, and maybe a racehorse of their own."
