Will Newmarket's Craven meeting provide the main contenders for the Classics?
The 2022 Flat season is picking up pace and it is full steam ahead to the first of the Classics – the Qipco 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket – on April 30 and May 1 respectively.
Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Our Classic Clues series, which runs every morning, has you covered.
Here's a recap of Monday's news and how it has impacted the Classic betting, while we mark your card with key names to note on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Round-up: bet365 Craven Stakes declarations
While there were no on-course clues for this year’s Classics during Monday’s action, the more intriguing news came off the track with declarations being made for Wednesday’s bet365 Craven Stakes (3.35).
Native Trail, the current favourite for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas, was declared for the mile Group 3, and will put his unbeaten record on the line against six rivals.
Charlie Appleby's son of Oasis Dream, who is 2-2 in Group 1s including landing the Dewhurst on his last start, is odds-on for the Craven and an impressive victory against inferior rivals – he is rated 17lb better than anything else in the race – will no doubt see his Guineas odds shorten.
Market mover:
Qipco 2,000 Guineas
Coroebus 7-2 (from 9-2)
What they said:
Charlie Appleby, speaking about Native Trail and Coroebus on Twitter:
“Work went very well over the weekend with Native Trail and Coroebus. Native Trail has been declared for the Craven and I couldn’t be any happier with him, I’m looking forward to seeing him out. With respects to Coroebus, after a collective decision over the course of the weekend, we’ve decided we’ll go straight to the Qipco 2,000 Guineas."
All eyes on . . . Newmarket
The first of many Classic clues on the track this week will take place on Tuesday with the Group 3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (3.35), where six of the nine runners hold an entry for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas.
Last year’s Group 2 Rockfel Stakes winner Hello You, who is the shortest price of the Nell Gwyn runners for the Guineas, puts her credentials to the test. She once again faces Cachet, who was second behind Dave Loughnane’s runner in the Rockfel.
Also on Tuesday, Richard Hannon runs Qipco 2,000 Guineas entry Tacarib Bay in the Listed bet365 European Free Handicap (2.25).
Hannon has won this race twice (2014 and 2018) in the last ten years, with his stable going on to win the 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas respectively each time. It was not with either of his Free Handicap winners, however, so if Tacarib Bay obliges on Tuesday it may be worth looking at any other Hannon runners in the 2,000 Guineas.
