Apprentice jockey Wesley Joyce to be discharged from hospital next week
It is hoped talented apprentice Wesley Joyce will be discharged from hospital next week after making "significant progress in his recovery" from a serious fall at the Galway festival.
Just over five weeks have passed since the 19-year-old was first treated in intensive care at University Hospital Galway, but the 7lb claimer looks set to start a rehabilitation programme.
Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board senior medical officer Dr Jennifer Pugh said that Joyce was grateful for the "incredible support" he has received since the incident when partnering Red Heel in the Listed Corrib Fillies Stakes.
His mount had been in front when appearing to jink at the road crossing about a furlong and a half into the contest, unseating Joyce into heavy traffic.
Pugh said: "I am pleased to report that Wesley has made significant progress in his recovery from the injuries he sustained on July 28. Wesley suffered a number of complex injuries that included a vascular injury within his chest, damage to his larynx and also to his lungs, ribs and collarbone.
"He remains under the terrific care of the team at University Hospital Galway and is in good form. It is hoped Wesley will be discharged next week at which point he will commence his rehabilitation process.
"The incredible support from his family, racing colleagues and wider public in recent weeks has been hugely uplifting and Wesley wishes to express his thanks to everyone for their support."
Pugh added: "Wesley and the IHRB continue to be thankful of the care Wesley received on track from the Order of Malta, doctors on duty and the incredible team at University Hospital Galway."
Joyce had ridden six winners from 123 rides in Ireland this season and was primarily supported by Red Heel's trainer Mick Mulvany, who has described the teenager as "a very good pilot who doesn't make many mistakes".
