Weighed In: the best and worst from this week's great racing

Performance of the week

There were terrific performances on the track all week, so ultimately the honours have to go to York itself.

Four fantastic days of racing were matched with excellent prize-money, tremendous crowds, exciting finishes, premature celebrations, thunder and lightning, and much anticipation about the meeting next year.

Bravo York, and to all those who helped make it such a memorable week on and off the course.

Disappointment of the week

We were promised a thrilling head-to-head battle in the Nunthorpe Stakes. But while Lady Aurelia played her part in just failing to take the prize, Battaash produced a poor run.

Highly talented, Battaash has shown himself to be highly-strung in the past (hence him being gelded) and his Mr Hyde overpowered his Dr Jekyll before the start at York.

In finishing fourth he failed to live up to expectations, and hopefully connections can tinker away with him to get his head spot on for his next target.

Celebration of the week

No, not that one from Frankie Dettori – there has already been enough done on that. Instead, look no further than Oisin Murphy at Goodwood.

The jockey was ecstatic when the result of the photo finished showed Lightning Spear had captured the Celebration Stakes, and he wanted everyone to know how happy he was.

Cue frantic and frenzied whip waving to the crowd - a move that was so vigorous that his whip came flying out of his hand in the process. Good on you, Oisin.

Most remorseful man of the week

Is undoubtedly Davy Russell.

Russell received a caution from the Turf Club after appearing to punch Kings Dolly in the back of the head at Killarney last week.

Denis Egan, chairman of the Turf Club, said Russell was “genuinely remorseful” and that a caution would be a “sufficient deterrent” against similar actions in the future.

Most deserving winner of the week

It has to be Nakeeta, doesn’t it? Beaten a nose in Chester Cup and half a length in the Irish Cesarewitch last season, Nakeeta came out on top in a close finish to capture the Ebor at York for trainer Iain Jardine, jockey Callum Rodriguez and owners Alex and Janet Card.

Of course no horse ever deserves to win a race, but it seems fair for Nakeeta to get his moment in the sun after so many valiant efforts in the past couple of years.

Why does it always rain on me? The heavens well and truly opened before the start of the Ebor festival on Wednesday. Fortunately, the week ended with bright sunshine on the Knavesmire.

Quote of the week

Peter Swann, co-owner of Sands Of Mali and chairman of Scunthorpe United, finds winning the Gimcrack is rather distracting when it comes to following the football scores.
