Badly burned mare on road to recovery as Dream Alliance team raise £8,500

More than £9,000 has been raised to help badly injured racemare Juwireya after the arson attack last Sunday at her south Wales stable where Welsh National winner Dream Alliance was brought up.

One of the big-race winner's syndicate Howard Davies started a JustGiving page after the devastating attack which killed the two-year-old Impossible Dream, who had been bred by the same team headed up by Jan and Brian Vokes.

Money has kept flowing in this week after a target of £5,000 was set to help rebuild the stable at Cefn Fforest, Blackwood and pay for Juwireya's recovery.

The Fire Service and police officers are currently working to establish the cause of the fire and anyone with any information should call Gwent Police on 101 quoting log number 135 26/11/17 or Crimestopppers on 0800 555 111.

Davies also had some good news about Juwireya, whose pet name is Hettie, as he posted a picture of the mare on Thursday night: "Really, really good news this evening.

"Hettie ate her first 'proper' meal in five days and her face is starting to heal thanks to the superb treatment she's receiving from Ron Williams and his team in Church Village. The swelling in her leg has reduced by 30 per cent and the overall improvement is wonderfully visible.

"In addition to her burns there was also nasty smoke inhalation damage, which has caused her discomfort but this has also started to loosen and be jettisoned. She truly is a warrior!"

The JustGiving page also has a picture of the burned out stables, and Davies added: "We finished clearing the remains of the site today, it's been a pretty painful experience but also therapeutic.

"We can't replace Rodders [two-year-old Impossible Dream] but we can try to honour his memory with a loving and safe home for when his mother comes home. We are determined we are not going to give in to the mindless cowards who killed him without an ounce of compassion."

Davies is one of the 23-strong syndicate that owned Dream Alliance, whose extraordinary rags-to-riches tale became the subject of Dark Horse, a documentary screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
