'He could be underpriced next time given he's trained by Willie Mullins'
After seven days of thrills and spills, the curtain has finally come down on an action-packed week at the Galway festival.
There were some excellent displays under both codes, but Irish reporter Mark Boylan has highlighted five winners who may be worth taking on for their next start.
Hewick
Tote Galway Plate (Wednesday)
Victory for Shark Hanlon's stable star in the Galway Plate was one of the feelgood stories of the week at Ballybrit, but expecting him to win the Kerry National on September 21 off an 8lb higher mark of 163 looks a stretch.
Handicap winners off ratings of 160 or higher are highly uncommon in Ireland – only five have succeeded since the turn of the millennium – and had Hewick been running in last year's Listowel highlight off his new mark, he would have been giving as much as 23lb away to some rivals.
As a €850 purchase, this year's bet365 Gold Cup scorer has been the horse of a lifetime for connections but it will be a substantial ask for him to pull off another massive pot next time.
There is also the possibility he might have been beaten on Wednesday had the ill-fated Gabynako not fallen at the last. Keith Donoghue had not asked any question of the Arkle runner-up and was moving ominously well into the race, although the winner also deserves credit for surviving interference in the straight.
Rambranlt'jac
Guinness Beginners Chase (Thursday)
It looked as though joint-favourites Fakiera and Chinx Of Light softened each other up on the front end in this 2m6½f contest, and Rambranlt'jac was the one to take advantage as they tired late on.
Alfa Mix's rating of 132 provides some substance to the form, but that rival hasn't looked the most reliable and has failed to really kick on as expected from finishing second in a useful Punchestown handicap chase in November.
Third Oscar Academy was beaten in three open point-to-points before this, so that couldn't have been considered strong recent form either.
Rambranlt'jac delivered a career-best performance, and for that deserves credit. However, he seemingly hasn't been the easiest to train judging by just seven runs in roughly 1,000 days and could be underpriced next time given he's trained by Willie Mullins.
Tudor City
Guinness Galway Hurdle (Thursday)
Tony Martin pulled off the training performance of the week to plunder a fourth Galway Hurdle in nine years with Tudor City, and connections might already be plotting a return to the same prize in 2023 given his aptitude for this track.
It's worth remembering, though, that the ten-year-old was not placed in the nine hurdles starts that followed his win in this race in 2019.
Likewise, Martin's 2014 winner Thomas Edison failed to win another race in the nine starts that followed his Galway Hurdle triumph – though he looked set to play a major role when falling at the last in the same race a year later – while Quick Jack's record was 1-11 after landing the Ballybrit hurdling highlight in 2015. That sole win came on the Flat.
Tudor City would be more interesting if connections opt to revert to the Flat next time, but a 7lb rise will make life tougher for him when reappearing over hurdles.
Gabbys Cross
Guinness Galway Blazers Handicap Chase (Friday)
Henry de Bromhead enhanced his excellent record in the Galway Blazers when Gabbys Cross struck under a decisive ride from Rachael Blackmore, but the useful seven-year-old isn't certain to follow up next time given he's been slightly hit and miss in the past.
It was a career-best effort from the sometimes free-going sort who once jumped a fence on his way to the start having bolted.
The manner in which runner-up Busselton kept him honest all the way up the straight meant the winner likely had a hard race.
Throw in the fact he isn't always foot-perfect in terms of his jumping and he will need to keep improving to land another handicap on his next start.
A 6lb rise for that two-and-a-half-length success means he is now up to a career-high mark of 143.
Politesse
Eileen Kelly Memorial Chase (Sunday)
This likeable eight-year-old showed a fine attitude when following up her Connacht National win in Sunday's 2m6½f conditions chase.
However, it must be noted runner-up Battleoverdoyen has been previously reported to have breathing issues and appeared a weak finisher here, trading as low as 1.03 in-running on Betfair before fading close home.
Politesse's other main market rival Agusta Gold exited at the first fence, so this looks a piece of form to treat with plenty of caution.
She had to dig deep, but arguably made hard work of a decent opportunity and now looks set to be targeted at black type races in the autumn.
Given she is probably reliant on decent ground to bring her very best, some progress will be required to win at Graded level.
