Tracks team up with leading charity to assist racegoers with hidden disabilities
The Racecourse Association (RCA) has partnered with a leading disabilities charity to make racecourses a more accessible and inclusive place for people with hidden difficulties.
The organisation, which oversees 59 racecourses in Britain, will formally recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme that is widely used across retail, travel, health and public services sectors as an indicator of hidden disability, such as autism, Crohn's disease or diabetes.
David Armstrong, RCA chief executive, said: “This valuable initiative, whilst subtle, provides thousands of individuals with the peace of mind they need to enjoy their day.
“British racing is an inclusive sport and a fantastic day out for all. By partnering with Hidden Disabilities Sunflower I believe this further demonstrates our commitment to educating ourselves in this important area and taking action with an initiative I hope will be of use to returning and new customers.”
A period of training has been undertaken by racecourse staff in advance of the RCA joining the scheme with the group confident that staff will be able to assist those wearing the lanyards should it be required.
Paul White, chief executive of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, said: “We couldn’t be more delighted that the RCA have joined the growing global network of sunflower members. By training their staff it is a clear demonstration that everyone is welcome at British racecourses. A day at the races means inclusive fun and enjoyment for all.”
Racegoers will be able to contact their chosen racecourse to request a sunflower lanyard with pre-booked tickets, while a limited number will be made available at racecourse entrances.
There will also be the option to bring an existing sunflower lanyard which will be recognised in the same way by racecourse staff.
