Three runners who catch the eye at Kempton tonight
It is horrible outside, so wrap up warm and pop on Racing UK as Kempton hosts a seven-race card on the channel. The action begins at 4.40pm and runs through until 7.45pm. Here are three of the more intriguing runners
Trainer Mick Attwater would not have many horses win first-time out, so it was a notable performance from Lawn Ranger to score on debut at Lingfield last month.
Big, tall and green, the three-year-old gelding did well to handle the contours of Lingfield and will likely be better suited by the flat Kempton course. He will also have learned plenty from his debut.
The form has not worked out great and Lawn Ranger has a penalty to carry, but he should give another good account of himself this evening.
Robert The Painter
6.45 Kempton
Trainer Des Donovan sends over a couple of fascinating runners tonight, the most interesting of which looks to be Robert The Painter.
The ten-year-old has shown little in two starts for Donovan at Dundalk and lines up in this race off a lowly mark of 66. He has won off as high as 95, albeit that was four years ago.
He has run good races off higher marks than 66 more recently, and any movement in the betting for him – or stablemate Indus Valley (4.40) would be noteworthy.
We all need a friend to help us from time to time and their assistance can sometimes cause us to turn our lives around. Just ask Thaqaffa.
The five-year-old is a bit of a worrier, so lives and goes racing with Shetland pony Rita for company. The partnership seems to work, with Thaqaffa scoring at this course last time up.
Raised 6lb for that win, Thaqaffa remains 5lb below his highest winning mark and will no doubt be getting a good pre-race pep talk from his companion before he goes into battle.
