'There's still juice in his price' - why this horse can win the Coral-Eclipse
Saturday's Coral-Eclipse (3.35) is set up to be an absolute cracker with a top-class field of six being readied for the Sandown Group 1. But who will win? Some of our expert tipsters have had their say.
Bay Bridge
Odds: 4-1
By David Jennings, deputy Ireland editor
Undone by a stop-start gallop and rattling quick ground in the Prince of Wales's Stakes, Bay Bridge can bounce back on slower ground in the hope there will be a more generous pace from the word go. He posted a Racing Post Rating of 126 when winning the Brigadier Gerard over course and distance and a repeat of that will make him hard to beat.
You must remember Royal Ascot was his first appearance in a Group 1 and the experience is sure to stand to him. We already know his best ever run was at the track and the three-year-olds still have plenty to prove in my eyes. I could not believe he was 6-1 earlier in the week and even now there is some juice in his price.
Native Trail
Odds: 10-3
By Robbie Wilders, tipster
I think Vadeni has it all to do as he enjoyed the run of the race in the Prix du Jockey Club and showed his improvement on soft ground. The possibility of quick ground must be a concern for the hot favourite.
With Stone Age and Real World ruled out, I'd have this between Native Trail and Bay Bridge. Slight preference is for the former, who has been crying out for this step up to 1m2f for some time and should relish Sandown's stiff finish. Receiving 10lb in weight-for-age is a massive plus and this top-class three-year-old never runs a bad race.
Vadeni
Odds: 13-8
By Owen Goulding, reporter
He is probably a bit shorter than I would want him to be, but Vadeni was all class in France last time and I struggle to see past him, even with some smart horses in opposition.
Stepping up to 1m2½f for the French Derby resulted in a devastating performance as he cruised into contention and settled the race in a matter of strides. He did have everything go perfectly, but I implore you to say he would not have won regardless of the set up.
The ground is a small worry, but he is actually unbeaten on good and I think he can prove just why he is second favourite for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Bay Bridge
Odds: 4-1
By Graeme Rodway, deputy betting editor
He looked a star in the making when bolting up in the Brigadier Gerard over course and distance on his seasonal reappearance and was given too much to do in a slowly run race when second at Royal Ascot last time.
Bay Bridge ran the final half-mile nearly a quarter of a second (in the region of a length and a half) quicker than the winner State Of Rest and the result would probably have been the other way around had he been ridden closer to the moderate early fractions.
It was probably the only ride Ryan Moore got wrong all week. The return to this track is in his favour and rain would also be a positive for a horse whose dam's sire is Multiplex. His progeny often enjoy a bit of juice in the ground.
