The show goes on: Henderson aces on parade at curtailed Lambourn open day

Racing fans will have the opportunity to see some of the leading jumps stars at the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Lambourn open day on Good Friday after organisers announced that the morning activities would go ahead as planned.

Events in the afternoon, including camel racing and the trade stands, have been cancelled due to the inclement weather.

All the yards will be open from 8.30am to 1pm, and Nicky Henderson’s heroes past and present, including Champion Chase winner Altior, dual Champion Hurdle victor Buveur D’Air and Bobs Worth, who landed the 2013 Gold Cup, will be paraded hourly at the champion trainer’s base at Seven Barrows.

Sir Anthony McCoy will be at Henderson’s yard from 11am.

Henderson said: "While it is disappointing not to have the afternoon events, we are all very excited to welcome everyone to Lambourn and into our yards. Seven Barrows will be open as usual with Nico de Boinville, Mick Fitzgerald and AP McCoy all present along with all our horses including Altior, Buveur D’Air, Might Bite, My Tent Or Yours and Bobs Worth."

Mark Smyly, chairman of the open day organising committee, said on Tuesday morning: "It's a nightmare and it was a difficult decision. It's just a day that fits in the calendar. There was no racing – I know there is now – but there were no weddings or parties and people say why can't you postpone it and have it another day, but it just doesn't really work on another weekend. It suits everybody where it is."

The silent auction is another eagerly anticipated event at the open day and prizes include a tour of Shadwell’s Nunnery Stud, a racing plate from My Tent Or Yours and a morning on the gallops with Harry Whittington.

The revised entry cost to the event is £10 and programmes, which cover all the trainers’ horses and yard details, cost £5.

A statement released on the Lambourn open day website read: "Those who have pre-booked tickets to the event will be given a free programme at the entrance to their first car park. The day is a charity event. All profits go for the welfare of the hard-working stable staff and local needy causes. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused, but we all look forward to welcoming you to Lambourn. We are really disappointed not to provide you with a full day of entertainment."
