Racecourse report: entry, food and pint prices from Hexham

Hexham

Date visited:Wednesday, November 16, 2022

Was it a big day?

No. There was a Class 3 contest, but apart from that it was a run-of-the-mill midweek fixture.

How much was entry on the gate?

The Paddock enclosure was £15 on raceday (£12 in advance), while there was a concession for those aged 65 or over, also for students with a student union card of £13 (£10 in advance).

The Club enclosure was £23 on raceday (£20 in advance). You could pay with both cash or card on the gate.

Other than restaurants/hospitality, what were the food and beverage options?

There are plenty of food and drink options for racegoers. The Club enclosure has the Chase Bar, while in the Paddock there is a bar next to the Britbet shop. There is also the Bramble Tudor Bar, with the Bramble Tudor Cafe next door.

The cafe offers a decent range of food, including pies with mushy peas and gravy, a variety of sandwiches, jacket potato with cheese and beans, and tomato and roasted red pepper soup with a roll.

There are various sweet options for dessert including lemon drizzle cake and caramel shortbread.

What's the damage?

Tea: £2.50
Coffee: £2.50
Bottle of water: No bottles but tap water available for free
Cheapest pint: Becks Vier, Stowford Press Cider and Greene King IPA, £5.50
Guinness: £6.00
Prosecco: £27.50
Pie: £5.50

What was the pie like?

The chicken pie didn't come with mushy peas and gravy on this occasion, but that was the only drawback as the pie itself was delicious. The balance between pastry and chicken was spot on and it was served nice and hot.

And the queues?

There was a bit of a queue in the Bramble Tudor Cafe, where it was a ten-minute wait due to the popularity of the food, but apart from that all queues were flowing and manageable across the track.

What they say

I've recently retired and was here celebrating that with a couple of my friends, but I try to come once a year at least. I had the jacket potato with cheese and beans and I didn't feel out of pocket paying £5 for it – sometimes you can feel robbed. You expect to pay a little more for beers at sports venues but it wasn't too much more expensive. A lot of what the track does is pleasing.
