The Racecourse Prices Index: how much for food and drink at Lingfield?

The Racecourse Prices Index (RPI) is a new and occasional series, in which we report from each of Britain and Ireland's racetracks on the cost of going racing.

Racecourse report: entry, food and pint prices from Lingfield

Lingfield

Date visited: Thursday, May 19

Was it a big day?

There were plenty in hospitality but a Class 5 and 6 offering on the track.

How much was entry on the gate?

£22 general admission, £17 students and over 60s

Other than restaurants/hospitality, what were the food and beverage options?

There were a few options, including the Brasserie where sausage and mash is £10. Other options were chicken and cajun wedges, vegetable chilli and rice or baked potatoes at £7.50. The fish and chip shop was open – the signature dish was £10. As it was not busy, Porky's Real Sausage, Premium Lager and Pizza Bar and the Kebab Shack were closed but they were busy when I visited on Derby Trial day.

All drink prices taken from the main racecourse bar, or where there are multiple bars, one chosen at random.

What was the sausage and mash like?

A bit like those you would see at school dinners but plenty of mash and very filling. The lady also gave me a free bottle of water which was nice.

And the queues?

There seemed to be more staff than punters in some of the outlets so little in the way of queues.

What did the punters say?

"I had the fish and chips from the shop and they were excellent. I didn't have to queue as I like to eat early and also there's not many here which is what you get when you have a Class 5 and 6 racecard. At the weekends it's rammed with people."
Robert Davey, from Lewes
