Racecourse report: entry, food and pint prices from Hereford
Hereford
Date visited: Tuesday, November 15, 2022
Was it a big day?
No. There were five Class 4s and two Class 5s so very much a standard midweek fixture.
How much was entry on the gate?
£19.50 for adults and £15 for concessions (60+).
Hereford's 'day at the races' package has reportedly been quite popular. This costs £19.50 and includes admission, a racecard, a pie and a drink. It is available in advance, with the cut-off point seven days before the meeting.
Other than restaurants/hospitality, what were the food and beverage options?
The Piglets Pantry offers the main food service for racegoers and there is another mini kiosk in the grandstand. There was a burger van for another food option, while the Hummingbird bar was an impressive modern-looking facility.
What's the damage?
Bottle of water: £2.00
Tea: £2.00
Coffee: £2.50
Cheapest pint: £5.20, Carlsberg or Kingstone Press
Guinness: £5.90
Champagne: Only Prosecco in main bar, £35
Pie: £4.90
Burger: £6.50
All drink prices taken from the main racecourse bar, or where there are multiple bars, one chosen at random
What was the pie like?
A blackboard labelled the pie and sausage rolls options in hand-written chalk so I thought I would give it a go. There was an excellent variety including vegetarian and vegan options.
The pie itself was fairly good, better than the football standard but nothing to go mad about. The homemade feel I got from the chalkboard was, however, a little misleading.
And the queues?
Excellent but then again it felt extremely quiet.
