The Racecourse Prices Index: free Jubilee Spritz and £6 Carling at Newbury
Racecourse report: entry, food and pint prices from Newbury
Newbury
Date visited: Tuesday, May 31, 2022
Was it a big day?
By Newbury's standards, it was a rather low-key day. The card was split between four maiden races and four handicaps, with the feature being a Class 3 handicap worth £8,100 to the winner.
How much was entry on the gate?
Rather than the usual two enclosures (Grandstand and Premier), there was just one for today's meeting, owing to lower crowd numbers. The Grandstand itself was closed, but £20 on the gate allowed you access to the Premier enclosure, which is definitely value for money.
Other than restaurants/hospitality, what were the food and beverage options?
All punters were offered a 'Jubilee Spritz' on the gate, in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee – a great start to the day!
With the Grandstand closed, there were fewer options than usual. The Fish and Chip shop proved popular, but choice was perhaps limited. The Butchers Block, usually open in the Premier Enclosure, was also closed on the day.
The main bar open was the Fast Track Bar, which served the standard fare.
What's the damage?
Bottle of water: £2
Cheapest pint: £6, Carling
Guinness: £6.50
Champagne: £67.50 a bottle
Burger: £9 for a cheeseburger from the burger van
All drink prices taken from The Fast Track bar.
What was the burger like?
Standard fare, far from gourmet quality but serviceable. For those with more particular tastes, the burgers come plain of sauces and salad, which you can add later.
And the queues?
A lack of staff seemed to contribute to some longer queues and I did overhear a few grumbles about the waiting times. That being said, most were perfectly happy with the queueing situation, perhaps in the British spirit.
