Racecourse report: entry, food and drink prices from Yarmouth

Was it a big day?

Not as such. The eight-race card featured four Class 6 races and three Class 5s, as well as an interesting two-year-old Class 3.

How much was entry on the gate?

£27 for the premier enclosure, £20 for paddock and grandstand, although you do get a racecard worth £3 thrown in.

Other than restaurants/hospitality, what were the food and beverage options?

There is an outside catering area near the weighing room. The fish and chip van is legendary and is favoured by many of the locals as well as many visitors from Newmarket. They've had to put the price of their fish and chips up £1 due to rising costs but no-one seemed to be complaining. There is also a hot dog van, hog roast and a seafood stall. There is also a sweet stall which is popular with younger racegoers.

What's the damage?

Bottle of water: £1.50
Cheapest pint: Carlsberg £5.30 (No reusable eco glasses in operation but due to come in later this year)
Guinness: A reasonable £5.80
Fish and chips: £9

All drink prices taken from the main racecourse bar, or where there are multiple bars, one chosen at random.

How were the fish and chips?

Joe Bamford, who runs the stall, sources his fish from Iceland, where he says the colder sea gives the fish a better taste. He wasn't wrong and there were plenty of chips in my tray too.

And the queues?

Quiet. There were plenty of outside benches to eat in the sunshine.

What did the punters say?

"The fish and chips are out of this world and far better than anything we have back home. The prices in the bars are reasonable and I would certainly come again but will have to factor in the eight miles of roadworks on the A11 so I was a bit late. They say it will be going on for over a year, which we could have been told about."
