Tension, regret and accusations: how big-race appeals have played out

Tempers ran high on the two other occasions in the past decade when top-class races ended up being determined by an appeals panel.

Simple Verse won back her St Leger that way in 2015, having passed the post first only to be demoted by the raceday stewards, but connections of Sky Lantern had their appeal turned down when they argued she, rather than Elusive Kate, was the rightful winner of the Falmouth Stakes in 2013.

Ralph Beckett, trainer of Simple Verse, was plainly angry that the stewards had felt the need to intervene. "It’s not quite the same," he said after the appeal was successful. "It’ll never be quite the same. To have it taken away on the day was horrendous at the time. It’s been a pretty miserable 11 days."
