Studs under supervision after equine herpes discovered in six horses
Six cases of the highly contagious equine herpes virus have been found at two studs in Ireland.
The Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EVH-1) is the same disease that forced the quarantining of Kevin Ryan's yard, along with two neighbouring properties, in June last year.
The Irish Equine Centre, based in Naas, County Kildare, confirmed four cases of the disease have been discovered on a thoroughbred stud farm in Leinster.
Additionally, two cases were confirmed on a farm catering for both thoroughbreds and sport horses in the Munster area.
EHV-1 causes four clinical syndromes – respiratory disease, neonatal death, abortion and neurological. The cases on the two premises on Ireland are understood to belong to the neurological category.
The horses involved at both farms are being closely monitored and movement restrictions have been put in place.
