Sir Dragonet deal completed with high-quality colt set for switch to Australia
Chester Vase winner will continue career with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace
A tilt at the Cox Plate could be on the agenda for Sir Dragonet, with the colt set to join Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, having been trained to date by Aidan O’Brien.
After some jumping of the gun on social media earlier in the week, it has now been confirmed that Maher and owner Ozzie Kheir have completed a deal to buy the four-year-old from Coolmore for an undisclosed sum.
The son of Camelot is due to head into quarantine before being shipped to Australia next month.
After scoring on his debut at Tipperary last year, having not raced as a two-year-old, Sir Dragonet was an impressive winner of the Chester Vase. He started favourite for the Derby off the back of that but was beaten into fifth at Epsom behind stablemate Anthony Van Dyck.
“He’s got a massive pedigree,” Will Bourne, bloodstock manager for Ciaron Maher Racing, told racing.com. “He’s from the family of Galileo and is highly rated. It’s a quality purchase and we couldn’t be more excited.”
Sir Dragonet has not managed to get his head back in front since the Chester Vase, though he has finished in the money on every start of his nine-race career, and has finished runner-up on all four starts this year, most recently to stablemate Magical in the Tattersalls Gold Cup last month.
