'She looked absolutely top drawer' - our fancies for the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas

'50-1 could look big for 2,000 Guineas'

By James Burn, Lambourn correspondent

It was interesting during a post-Newbury pint on Saturday night to hear Lusail might be the one to take from the Greenham. I put that theory on Sunday to his trainer Richard Hannon, who didn't dismiss it, pointing out the Greenham runner-up may have needed the race and his previous Guineas heroes – Night Of Thunder and Billesdon Brook – were beaten in their trials. The 50-1 about Lusail could look big given that.

'He looks an each-way alternative'

By Keith Melrose, betting editor

If Native Trail is to be beaten, it probably depends on him not getting a chance to fully unfurl. Those looking for an each-way alternative should select on that basis and Burradon Stakes winner Checkandchallenge has shown the ability to settle and quicken off a moderate pace. There were some excuses in behind at Newcastle, but no one could argue that he was the best horse on the day. He is both a likely runner and could have something which Native Trail does not.

'She should go close in the 1,000 Guineas'

By Robbie Wilders, tipster

The 1,000 Guineas can go the way of Discoveries, who is among the best-bred fillies in training as a sister to four-time Group 1 winner Alpha Centauri and a half-sister to 2020 Coronation Stakes heroine Alpine Star.

It is to her credit that she achieved more as a juvenile than her illustrious relatives by virtue of her top-level strike in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and there should be loads more to come as a three-year-old.

We can assume with confidence that Discoveries, who was kept to 7f as a two-year-old, can improve for the step up to a mile and has been given time to develop into her frame. If she gets the fast ground she requires at Newmarket and is not inconvenienced by the draw, she should go close.
