'She has to be worth another chance' - unlucky losers on day one at Goodwood
The opening day of Glorious Goodwood saw some tremendous winning performances, including Kyrpios's memorable battle with Stradivarius and Trueshan in the Goodwood Cup, but there was also a fair share of hard-luck stories. Here are a few of those who looked unlucky on Tuesday...
Brilliant Light
1.50 Goodwood
He was trapped in behind horses as Forest Falcon was getting first run passing the cutaway in the opening handicap. It’s stretching things to say he’d have beaten the eased-down winner had the gaps appeared sooner but it would have been much closer between the pair. He can make amends, with a race like the Cambridgeshire looking an obvious target.

Lord Protector
1.50 Goodwood
He was the other to take out of the opening race. His draw in stall 17 was no help and, after being a bit short of room before the cutaway, he made up plenty of ground in the closing stages to fare the best of those held up. There’s a decent handicap in him granted a better draw and a stiffer test of his stamina.

Crazy Luck
5.55 Goodwood
She came here in tremendous form following wins at Newbury and Chester but got absolutely no luck in running in the last quarter mile, shaping a good deal better than her ninth of 12 finishing position suggests. She has to be worth another chance.

And a few more . . .
Holloway Boy (2.25) is worth a mention as he reportedly lost a shoe in the Vintage, ditto Trueshan (3.35) on ground that would have been plenty quick enough in the Goodwood Cup.
The third qualifier is Wadi Bani (4.45), who shaped better than the bare form implies in the 6f maiden after missing the break and meeting plenty of trouble. He’s a scopey sort who will be interesting once he’s qualified for nurseries and when he learns to settle.
