Rugby club devastated after Wetherby accident leaves one man dead

One man has died and another has been left fighting for his life after they were hit by a car outside Wetherby racecourse having attended Charlie Hall Chase day on Saturday.

Aidy Scott, 65, was killed after a grey Mercedes struck two racegoers, part of a group, at around 5pm on the B1224 York Road. His friend Lee Roberts, 52, was airlifted from the scene with serious injuries.

The 40-year-old driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Both victims had close ties to the Birstall Victoria rugby league club, located south of Leeds and Bradford. Via the club's Facebook page, representative Mark Lockwood said: "It is with great sadness I write this post on behalf of Smiler and Aidy's families.

"Lee Roberts, the club open-age coach, was involved in a car accident yesterday while on a day out to Wetherby races with his mates.

"Lee is fighting for his life and we are all praying for him and his family. Unfortunately our friend and former Victoria physio Aidy Scott was tragically killed when a car ran them both over. Personally I'm broken inside, I can't begin to comprehend what Aidy and Lee's families are going through. This is a sad day."

A Gofundme page, set up on Sunday, has already raised over £2,700 to help Roberts with the cost of his treatment and recovery.
