Royal Ascot leading jockey 2022: can anyone stop Ryan Moore?
It is the final day of Royal Ascot and Ryan Moore is poised to be crowned top jockey for the week for a ninth time.
A Friday double raised his tally to five and two clear of his closest challengers with further chances to come. Yet it can all change on the final day . . .
Ryan Moore
5 wins, 4 seconds, 1 third
71 Royal Ascot winners
16 per cent strike-rate in last 14 days
The current leader features in every race on Saturday, but his best chance will come in the opener on hot Chesham Stakes (2.30) favourite Alfred Munnings. He made a huge impression on debut and already tops the market for next year's 2,000 Guineas.
Other notable chances include promising young stayer Wordsworth in the Queen Alexandra Stakes (6.10), while last year's Hardwicke Stakes runner-up Broome bids to go one better at 3.40.
The 2021 Wokingham Stakes winner Rohaan is a big price for a repeat success (5.00) while Sun King will need to step forward to land the Golden Gates Stakes (5.35). Audience (3.05) and Garrus (4.20) are outsiders.
Danny Tudhope
3-3-1
9 Royal Ascot winners
15 per cent strike-rate
Tudhope came within a head of a fourth winner of the meeting on Friday when second on Grand Alliance in the King Edward VII, but will need to cause a major surprise to capture his first leading jockey title.
Fresh is his obvious leading hope as the James Fanshawe-trained five-year-old tops the market in the Wokingham (5.00). Nate The Great has been in good form so is not totally discounted in the Queen Alexandra (6.10) but his other two rides, Holloway Boy (2.30) and Vadream (4.20), are big prices.
William Buick
3-1-0
31 Royal Ascot winners
23 per cent strike-rate
Perhaps best placed to catch Moore is William Buick, who rides the only odds-on shot across the seven races. The classy Hurricane Lane is back in action for the first time since his mighty Arc third and sets a high standard in the Group 2 Hardwicke (3.40).
Noble Truth is vying for favouritism in the Jersey (3.05) having powered to a six-length victory in his first start this season.
Creative Force was successful in the Jersey last season and takes aim at a Royal Ascot double in the day's big race, the Platinum Jubilee Stakes (4.20). Falling Shadow is another notable chance (5.35), while Woodcote winner Legend Of Xanadu (2.30), Jumby (5.00) and Stratum (6.10) complete a solid last day of rides.
James McDonald
2-0-0
3 Royal Ascot winners
21 per cent strike-rate
Attention for the Australian-based rider will be firmly on capturing a Group 1 sprint double in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes (4.20) with Home Affairs. He was on board in February when the three-year-old downed Nature Strip at Flemington, and McDonald boosted that form himself in Tuesday's breathtaking King's Stand win.
He would need momentum and luck on his side, requiring victory with all four Saturday rides and Moore not to score. Missed The Cut is a fancied runner (5.35), while Lampang (5.00) and Timour (6.10) are outside contenders.
Frankie Dettori
1-2-3
77 Royal Ascot wins
13 per cent strike-rate
It has not been the best of weeks for Dettori but the legendary rider can never be ruled out. Following a breakthrough on Inspiral on Friday, he will need a five-timer and a luckless day for Moore to steal the title.
Honiton (5.35) appears his best chance while Alzahir (2.30) and Samburu (3.05) are fancied in their respective markets. Magic will be required to steer home Kinross (4.20) and Urban Beat (5.00) who are 50-1 and 40-1 respectively.
