Roger Teal hoping to send Kenzai Warrior on Royal Ascot redemption mission

Things did not go to plan for Kenzai Warrior in the 2,000 Guineas but he will not have to wait long for a shot at redemption, with Roger Teal potentially sending his stable star to Royal Ascot next week.

The son of Karakontie broke awkwardly and was slowly away at Newmarket on Saturday but rallied under Jason Watson to finish ninth.

Teal had planned to step Kenzai Warrior up in trip for the Investec Derby on July 4, but he is not convinced the colt will make the field and could instead aim him at the 1m4f King Edward VII Stakes on June 16 or the 1m2f Hampton Court Stakes the following day.

"It was a nightmare," said Teal on Monday. "Our race was over before it started but it's just one of those things and he ran really well considering. It's frustrating because we didn't really learn a lot.

"I watched it back yesterday and asked why he had to be the only one to do that. He was brilliant in the paddock and went down to the start well. He may have just been in the stalls a tad too long.

"We would have been fine if he was beaten after running his race but we'll never know how he would have fared with a better start. He's come out of the race well and we'll dust ourselves off.

"There's a couple of options at Royal Ascot for him. I don't know if he'll get in the Derby after his run in the Guineas and we'd be kicking ourselves if we missed Ascot as well as Epsom.

"The schedule is so condensed and you don't have much time between races. We'll be guided by him as he didn't really have a race. It might have helped him get some energy out of his system."

The trainer has enjoyed a promising start to the delayed season and on Friday he landed the Abernant Stakes with Oxted, who provided apprentice jockey Cieren Fallon with his first Group winner.

"This game is a great leveller," added Teal. "One day you're up there and the next you're brought down to earth with a bang. We were absolutely delighted with Oxted as it was a remarkable performance.

"He'll most likely be aimed at the Diamond Jubilee Stakes [June 20] as he seems to perform best over six furlongs. He should come on for the run as he had a bit of a blow at Newmarket."

Teal is not the only one looking forward to the royal meeting and on Monday Ryan Moore, who landed the 1,000 Guineas aboard Love, spoke on BBC Radio 4's Today programme about its importance to the breeding industry.

"It's going to be very different but we need to find out about these horses," said Moore. "Everybody wants to see them run and hopefully we can put on a good show.

"Everybody is happy to do what is required at this stage and racing will continue to take every precaution. Fortunately for us our sport is played out on 40 hectares rather than just one acre."
