Robyn Brisland two-year-old gambled into 9-2 from 40-1 in 'lottery' Brocklesby

Robyn Brisland is hoping to make an instant impact on the new Flat turf campaign on Saturday with heavily backed Brocklesby Stakes (1.15) candidate Jiffy Boy, who is now as short as 9-2 having been as big as 40-1 in places for the season opener at Doncaster on Saturday.

The Hampshire-based trainer will rely on the son of Mondialiste, who cost 1,500gns at the Tattersalls Somerville Yearlings Sale last autumn, in the 5f contest. The juvenile will bid to give the trainer a first win in the race on his first attempt at the race.

Jiffy Boy's dam, Renaissant, won as a two-year-old and he is closely related to other juvenile winners, which has prompted punters to latch on to his chances at Town Moor.

'He won't disgrace himself'

Despite the significant support, Brisland is hoping his charge will put his best foot forward, even if he does not win.

He said: "He's what I call a sharp, early two-year-old. He's not the best but he's a good starting point. No-one knows how good everyone's is – it's a lottery ticket.

"He's been very straightforward and we make all of ours like that. He's been sharp enough and hopefully he'll run well. He won't disgrace himself."

Brisland has called on the services of the in-form David Probert for the ride on Jiffy Boy, with the Royal Ascot-winning rider operating at a 20 per cent strike-rate over the last two weeks, and hopes the pair can kickstart a strong season with his juveniles.

"You know what you get from David is what you should get from a top-flight jockey. He always puts the horse in the right place that they're capable of winning from. It's very easy when you use jockeys like that," he added.

"It's the first year we've ever had any number of two-year-olds, we've got 32 in at the moment. Personally I respect Bill Turner and David Evans, they're the people I'm aspiring to be with my two-year-old winners."

While some bookmakers opened up long odds, Paddy Power and Betfair reported that Jiffy Boy was still being backed in the week when they opened up at far shorter prices.

Paddy Power's spokesperson Paul Binfield said: "We did indeed see money for Jiffy Boy and we originally put him in at 12-1, but was backed down to 9-2. It was a highly interesting move, so it will be fascinating to see his eventual starting price."

Betfair spokesperson Barry Orr added: "We hit most branches on the way down but initially only put it in at 14-1. It must be showing plenty at home but, in truth, nobody knows where they stand yet and the favourite [Persian Force] is very strong in the market."
