Yesyes cut to 25-1 for the St Leger after Egan nous helps land Chester Stakes
The Ralph Beckett-trained Yesyes was halved in price from 50-1 to 25-1 for next month's Cazoo St Leger after justifying 7-4 favouritism to land the Listed 1m6½f Chester Stakes.
Ridden by 53-year-old John Egan for the first time, the three-year-old Juddmonte filly was the beneficiary of Egan's experience, with the veteran rider keeping away from the rail to take the longer route on the outside to score by a short head.
Explaining the thought process behind the race-winning manoeuvre to Racing TV, Egan said: "I did say it to the lads inside beforehand that the ground was better out, don't go on the rail at all, but none of them went for it. The ground was a bit better on the outside and it's slower on the inside.
Of the promising filly, who also holds an entry in the Group 1 Qipco British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes at Ascot in October, Egan said: "She is a very big filly. She did very well to win round here and I think she's got a nice future. She's a big unit and when she's fully mature she'll be very nice."
The feature success completed a double on the day for Egan, who has ridden more winners on turf at Chester than anywhere else, as he kickstarted a 153-1 treble for Tom Dascombe with the success of Lady Caroline in the opening 7f novice stakes.
Dascombe was baffled at the price of 7½f handicap winner Fools Rush In, who went off at 10-1 when scoring under Tom Eaves before Jane Elliott completed a pleasing day all round for the local trainer aboard Solent Gateway in the closing 2m handicap.
