William Haggas tees up big British Champions Day with Yarmouth double
William Haggas advertised the good form of his stable ahead of a huge British Champions Day with a double at Yarmouth's penultimate meeting of the season.
Shadwell's smart prospect Almeraq went one better than his debut second when powering clear by three and three-quarter lengths under Jim Crowley in the 6f novice, before Al Waseela proved significantly better than a mark of 58 when capturing the 7f nursery.
"He's exciting and I really like him," Crowley said of Almeraq to Sky Sports Racing. "He's got a lovely mind on him and he's a horse for next year.
"He's improved a lot, he ran a lovely race first time and he was sharp out and did everything as you'd like. He's a well-bred horse, there's a lot of speed in the family and he likes a lot of juice in the ground."
Economics is due to star in the Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday for the Haggas team, while Montassib and Unequal Love are single-figure prices for the Group 1 sprint on the card.
Impressive winner
Benbatl's half-brother Sallaal made an impressive debut for Roger Varian and Jack Mitchell in the 7f novice. He found plenty under pressure to beat the 50-1 Roman Centurion by half a length.
"He's been a true professional," Mitchell said. "The only time he wasn't was when they quickened and he couldn't find his legs, but he dealt with it quite well. He showed a bit of class."
