William Buick confident of more improvement from impressive Goodwood winner Durham Castle
William Buick believes there is more to come from Durham Castle after he scored a second successive victory in the 6f handicap.
Trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, the son of Havana Grey powered to a three-length success over Rhythm N Hooves and gave the champion jockey hope that he is a three-year-old who will improve for the experience.
Speaking to Racing TV, Buick said: "He's quite a big horse. You'd hope everything he does this year should help him improve next year. These sprint handicaps are quite competitive and there are some well-seasoned horses in there, so I thought he did very well.
"He's very straightforward and he followed a strong pace there. He got a nice tow into the race, he built into it lovely, and he finished off strong. I thought there's a chance he'll get another furlong."
Closing the gap
Apprentice Jack Doughty reduced the deficit to three behind Sean Dylan Bowen in the title race when registering a victory on his first day back since suspension.
Doughty, who was given a 20-day whip ban, six of them deferred, for multiple counts of overuse of the whip, returned to action for the first time since August 14, when he held a two-win lead in the apprentice title.
Although his lead was overturned by Bowen, Doughty struck on his second ride on the card when partnering the James Fanshawe-trained East India Dock to success in the 2m handicap. It was the second part of a double for Fanshawe, whose Glittering Legend landed the opening mile maiden.
