'When I bought him, I thought I’d lost my tiny mind' - Romeo Foxtrot rewards Jo Davis with bumper win
Romeo Foxtrot rewarded the faith trainer Jo Davis showed in him at last year’s Tattersalls Ascot June Sale with a battling victory in the 2m bumper.
The four-year-old was a promising third on his debut at Bangor in April and held on to beat the Fergal O'Brien-trained Start Again by half a length under Gavin Sheehan to get off the mark.
Davis said: “When I bought him I thought I’d lost my tiny mind. There are no words to describe what he looked like. He was like a whippet pony. I actually nicknamed him my midlife crisis.
“In the back of my mind I thought he’s just got something about him. If nothing else he’ll go eventing for my daughter because I can’t afford to buy her made horses. We only gave £3,200 for him, but I’m quite pleased I possibly had a bit of a breakdown that day!”
Romeo Foxtrot was a second winner this campaign for Davis, which means she has already matched last season’s haul from just nine runners.
Davis said: “We could always train, it was just a case of you can’t train the horses if they’re no good. I’ve got such a great team behind me. It takes a lot of the pressure off and I can actually do my job now.”
Sheehan completed a double on the Jamie Snowden-trained Handlethekettle in the opening division of the 2m maiden hurdle.
O’Brien gained compensation when James Best rode his first winner for him on Fashionelle in the 2m4f mares’ novice handicap hurdle.
Fantastic four
Beat Box completed his four-timer since joining Dan Skelton when defying a penalty in the 2m½f novice handicap chase.
