What now for Pinatubo after St James's Palace defeat?
He came there travelling really well, but when he was asked to pick up he didn't do so nearly as well as Palace Pier. If you ran him over six furlongs he would be rushed off his feet. He's got a better chance of staying ten furlongs than people think, but the harsh reality is that he's not the horse he was as a two-year-old. He might just be a bit-part player for the rest of the season.
Paul Kealy, tipster
I would keep him to a mile. He clearly doesn't have the same dominance over his rivals as he did last year, but he stays the trip well enough to win at the top level and hardly disappointed given he was second to the smart Palace Pier, who looks like he could be a real player over longer trips. Dropping back to seven furlongs also wouldn't be a problem, but I wouldn't want to go over further with him. Pinatubo is all about speed and possesses an incredible change of gear, which he showed rounding the bend to get out of trouble. If you run the petrol tank dry over a longer trip he won't be able to kick in the acceleration when pushed for maximum effort.
Tom Collins, The Punt
Aim him at the Sussex Stakes, that's his best chance of winning a Group 1 over a mile, and after that I'd look to find a race over seven furlongs, the trip at which he was so superb last season. The Prix de la Foret on Arc day would be the obvious target and then they can decide whether to drop him back further in trip or aim at the Breeders' Cup Mile. Right now he seems to lack for stamina on these stiffer tracks. At Ascot he cruised into contention, but the turbo that we all saw at two was not there. He was beaten by a serious colt in Palace Pier, but backers must have been disappointed as William Buick was poised to pounce.
