'We've tried everything with him' - relief as sprinter Zarzyni finally ends 883-day drought

Former Group-level sprinter Zarzyni ended a 27-race losing run, stretching over 883 days, to strike on his first start in Class 5 company in the 5f handicap.

The David and Nicola Barron-trained seven-year-old had not won since scoring in a valuable contest at Musselburgh in April 2022, a victory that propelled him into Group 3 company.

He was later placed in the Dash on Derby day, while he has finished a close second three times this season before the drought was finally ended in holding off 11-4 favourite Eternal Sunshine by a head under Joe Fanning.

Joint-trainer David Barron told Racing TV: "It worked out well. I haven't a clue why he won there, we've tried everything with him. He's very smart, but I don't think the horse knows he's won. If he had time to think he'd have got beaten.

"He's a handy type to have in the yard as he's a very good work horse. When we have sprinters we have to work, he's the boy. We're thankful he's won and Musselburgh's been a lucky place for us."

The win was one of two on the day for the Barrons, who also landed the opening mile handicap with 9-4 favourite Hardman.
