'We owe her everything' - Silver Cup scorer Alfa Kellenic delights jubilant Craig Lidster
If Craig Lidster trains for half a century he will be lucky to have a horse who means as much to him as the remarkable Alfa Kellenic.
The flying filly made her third-season trainer's dreams come true when scoring at the Ebor meeting at York, just up the A19 from his Easingwold yard.
And she followed up that success by landing the Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup, taking what was a supposedly competitive sprint handicap in emphatic style by a length and three-quarters under 3lb claimer William Pyle.
"She's endless at the minute," Lidster said. "I was a bit nervous beforehand as this was a big day for us and this is great for all the team.
"The key is that she's a racehorse, she's got the mentality. She's not flashy at home, she's quite ordinary, but on the racecourse she comes alive.
"Where does she go from here? I don't know, but it's a nice problem to have. She's definitely got a Listed win in her. I'm in my third season and she's put us on the map. We owe her everything, not the other way around."
Majesty's 'nice step forward'
Sky Majesty followed up her Newbury debut success to take the Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Firth Of Clyde Stakes, Scotland's only Group race.
"She's good," said Callum Rodriguez, who rode the winner in the colours of Tony Bloom and Ian McAleavy. "She's taken a nice step forward. She picked up great when I asked and showed a great attitude when it mattered."
Persica will make 'a nice four-year-old'
Persica is a horse for the big occasion. He won the 1m2f handicap at Epsom on Derby day and scored his first success in stakes company by landing the Listed LiveScore Bet Doonside Cup over the same trip on Ayr's greatest afternoon of the season.
But it was only by half a length that the three-year-old held off dead-heaters Enfjaar and Eydon and he could do better at a shorter distance.
Jockey Sean Levey said: "He's lasted out to the line but I wonder how fully this horse stays a mile and a quarter. He doesn't lack speed. Maybe his optimum is actually coming back a furlong. He's a nice three-year-old and he'll make a nice four-year-old.
"My hand was forced a little bit. I was going wide and I could see Jim Crowley on Enfjaar going to have a dream run coming through, it forced me to go when I didn't really want to."
McDonald's emotional win
PJ McDonald pointed to the sky and punched the air as he passed the post in front on Aragon Castle, his first winner since the death of his father.
Asked about the celebration, he said: "I had my reasons. I lost my dad this week."
The 18-5 shot took the mile handicap by a neck and joint-owner Mick Mariscotti said: "We were hopeful. He's been promising to do something like that and he's finally done it. I'm delighted for PJ. It's great he's had a winner."
