The main draw on day three of the harvest festival was Ryan Moore making his first visit to Listowel, and he did not have to wait long to visit the winner's enclosure when partnering 1-4 favourite Thrice to a workmanlike, if ultimately convincing, success in the opening maiden for Ballydoyle.

Moore said: "He had a good run at the Curragh. He was still a bit babyish. He was a little bit lost going around the bends, but once he straightened up in the last furlong and a half he stayed going well."

Asked about riding at Listowel for the first time, he said: "It's quite flat. It's a bit ridgy but horses seem to handle it well. But we have a heated weighroom, which is good!"

Moore completed a double in the juvenile rated race, but he had to be at his strongest to get the Ballydoyle filly Medici Venus up on the line to beat the front-running The Marty Party by a short head.

It was hard work for Medici Venus, who was winning at the fourth time of asking, and it looked briefly as though she might not go through with her effort.

This was not only Moore's first ride at Listowel, it was his first ride at any Kerry track. Considering two of Aidan O'Brien's Derby winners, Anthony Van Dyck and Wings Of Eagles, both won their maidens at Killarney, that is a trivia question that many might have got wrong.

Super sub Carroll a very able deputy

Colin Keane was stood down for the day due to being unwell, and the main beneficiary was Gary Carroll, who gave a polished ride to the Jessica Harrington-trained Curvature to land the feature Listed Listowel Stakes.

The winner was never really out of the first two and picked up well in the straight to score by two and a half lengths from the luckless Princess Child, who was finishing second in a Listed contest for the third consecutive time.

Carroll said: "I won on her last year. She can be a little bit tricky and she can be a bit keen through her races, but she gave me a lovely ride today. The rain came, which suited her, and she was third in this race last year so she likes this track. The pace was nice, which she liked, she quickened off the bend and she went to the line well.

"I would not have ridden for the stable too often, but I have been lucky on one or two of the spares I've had. Long may it continue."

Ferris rolls back the years

Hilary McLoughlin and her partner, former jump jockey Martin Ferris, were successful in the 7f handicap with Ramiro, who got up in the last half-furlong to score under James Ryan. Ferris said: "The Castle Racing Syndicate who own him, started me off in pony races years ago. They are all from West Cork. I had a couple of winners for them and didn't ride in pony races for anyone else."
