Tiger Roll: from the Triumph Hurdle to a Cross Country hat-trick
Triumph Hurdle (2014)
The Triumph Hurdle has never been an obvious source of Grand National winners but it was an important platform for Tiger Roll, who comfortably beat Kentucky Hyden on his second start for Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown. This was also his first start under jockey Davy Russell, who was on board for his two successes at Aintree.
National Hunt Chase (2017)
Tiger Roll finished down the field in the 2015 World Hurdle but had more joy two years later when returning as a novice chaser and winning the National Hunt Chase under amateur rider Lisa O'Neill. She described the experience as "surreal" after the race but it would soon become the norm to watch Tiger Roll relishing marathon trips.
Most festival wins
6 Quevega (Mares' Hurdle 2009-14)
5 Golden Miller (Gold Cup 1932-36), Tiger Roll (Triumph Hurdle, National Hunt Chase, three Cross Country chases)
4 Nine horses including Arkle and Istabraq
Glenfarclas Chase (2018)
Tiger Roll could manage only fifth in the December dress rehearsal before his first start in the Cross Country but he made no mistake at the festival, just holding off the challenge of French contender Urgent De Gregaine. Jockey Keith Donoghue said he had battled hard to lose 8lb to make the ride and he was rewarded with a faultless round of jumping.
Glenfarclas Chase (2019)
After winning the 2018 Grand National, Tiger Roll was sent off the 5-4 favourite to win a second Glenfarclas Chase and made light work of Josies Orders, winning by 22 lengths. As described by a Racing Post analyst, Tiger Roll "absolutely bolted up" under Donoghue, setting up his successful bid to win back-to-back Grand Nationals.
Glenfarclas Chase (2021)
Tiger Roll was on a redemption mission after losing to Easysland in 2020 and struggling for form in his next three starts, but he made light work of the defending champion and won by 18 lengths. It was an emotional success for Donoghue and Tiger Roll's first for trainer Denise Foster, who has temporarily taken over Elliott's yard.
