'This was a serious performance and Mac Swiney is bred for the Derby test'

What did our experts make of the Irish 2,000 Guineas from an Epsom perspective?

'I'd be more concerned about whether he'd get a mile and a half'

It was a good performance from Mac Swiney. He might have even been headed by his stablemate but battled back well to win. It was his first proper run of the season and, as regards Epsom, I'd be more concerned about whether he'd get the mile and a half, especially having just dropped back to a mile here. His sire New Approach won the Derby after finishing second in the Irish Guineas, despite pulling like a train, while another of his progeny, Dawn Approach, blew his chance by refusing to settle when a red-hot favourite in 2013.

'If the recent wet weather continues I'd be very confident'

Mac Swiney is a live Derby contender and gives the Epsom Classic a much-needed boost. He had relevant excuses when beaten on his return at Leopardstown and thrived in the mud at the Curragh and has no stamina doubts on pedigree. His victory is a major form boost for Bolshoi Ballet, who beat him in the Derrinstown, but if the recent wet weather continues I'd be very confident about his turning the form around next month.

'Mac Swiney certainly looks about the best'

None of the main Derby protagonists – bar Aidan O'Brien's third-string Van Gogh – boasts Group 1-winning form so from a class angle Mac Swiney certainly looks about the best. A line can be drawn through his Derrinstown defeat and there's no doubt this was a serious performance in a decent Irish 2,000 Guineas. No winner of that race has won a Derby at Epsom since Grundy in 1975 which is a concern, but Mac Swiney has a pedigree which suggests he will be even better over the mile and a half at Epsom. You only need to look at second-place Poetic Flare to know trainer Jim Bolger can get his horses back in only a few weeks for a shot at another Classic.
