'They're the only Derbys I'll ever win!' - Miller Spirit completes unique double for Gary and Josh Moore at Epsom
Miller Spirit completed a unique Derby double when landing the apprentice jockeys version in impressive fashion under Alec Voikhansky.
The Gary and Josh Moore-trained four-year-old took the Jump Jockeys Derby over the course and distance this month by half a length, but sprinted clear to a four-and-a-half-length success this time.
"They're the only Derbys I'll ever win!" Gary Moore said. "The ground is key to him and he loves that bit of give in it. We knew after he went well there last time that we had to come back for this.
"It was nice to have Alec back on board again too. He used to be with me at the start of his career after he left school."
It was a fourth win of the season for Miller Spirit, who landed two handicaps at Goodwood in June, and he also continued the Moores's domination of the race. The yard has landed four of the last seven runnings of it.
"He stays a mile and a half and loves this ground – maybe Australia might take him!" Gary Moore joked. "He's a nice horse but is very big, so was always going to improve from what he did last year."
Murphy track magic
Oisin Murphy capped his terrific Epsom season at its final meeting of the year with a 115-1 treble.
Victories on New Bombay in the 7f nursery, Marcella in the 1m½f handicap and Come On You Spurs in the 7f handicap took Murphy's course strike-rate in 2024 to 39 per cent.
