'It means the world' - Sybil Ruscoe and Jeff Stelling among the Warwick winners
Tuesday: Warwick
Broadcasting icon Sybil Ruscoe was among the delighted winning connections of Organdi, who secured her first win of the year in the 3m1½f handicap chase under Sam Twiston-Davies.
Ruscoe is a member of the Beautiful People syndicate, who own the Richard Phillips-trained ten-year-old, with the group also consisting of Ruscoe’s radio and television colleagues John Inverdale and Jeff Stelling.
Inverdale and Ruscoe were among the first presenters hired by BBC Radio 5 Live in 1994, with the latter presenting the afternoon show for five years.
"To have a winner in a week in which we’ve been commemorating the life of the Queen, one of the great patrons and friends of racing, means the world to us," Ruscoe said.
"The care and the time that Richard takes, not only with his staff, but with his owners and horses is truly wonderful. I think it’s a great advert that you don’t have to be rich in this sport.
"You just have to have a great trainer and belief in a team of people and you can have some amazing days, whether you win or lose."
Although it was a first winner of the season for Phillips, he acknowledged the loyal support of the ownership group.
He said: "I’m absolutely thrilled for the Beautiful People. There are 20 lovely people in the syndicate and this is what it’s all about.
"We bought Organdi as a two-year-old in France and the owners have been so patient they deserve all the success they get. That’s her fifth win for them.
"This is why we do it, this is why we look after thoroughbreds. To bring happiness and joy to people is the best part of my job."
Super Solstalla
Trainer David Weston also got off the mark for the campaign as the veteran Solstalla regained her crown in the 2m3f mares’ handicap hurdle.
The ten-year-old won the race in 2020 under Page Fuller and the pair repeated the trick when they fended off the fast-finishing Une De La Seniere to score by a head on what could be Solstalla's final start.
Asked if she would be retired after the win, Weston said: "She may be. We’ll just have a look how she comes out of this because unfortunately, like all of us as we get a bit older, you need certain things to go right."
Fuller added: "They pretty much retired her last season and I said to them she’s got herself to a winning mark. I’m so pleased for them that the horses are running like this.
"When they’ve got such a small team to get the winners is hard, so days like this mean even more to them."
Repeat result
Vision Des Flos replicated last year's success in the feature 2m4f handicap chase, this time with a different name on the training licence and in different colours.
Brendan Powell steered Vision Des Flos to another comfortable win off the same mark of 127 for Joe Tizzard, with the Grade 2-winning hurdler now owned by the trainer’s father Colin.
