Themaxwecan seals 1,900-1 four-timer for Mark Johnston in Queen's Cup
Proud Scotsman Mark Johnston dominated the first Flat fixture of the season in his home country with a 1,900-1 four-timer headlined by Themaxwecan's victory in the Betway Queen's Cup.
The most prolific trainer in the history of British racing, Johnston won every race he had a runner in on the card and took the £75,000 feature with the gutsy Themaxwecan, who is owned by fellow Scot Douglas Livingston.
Jockey Ben Curtis was the main beneficiary of the Johnston juggernaut as he cemented his new link-up with the trainer with a treble on The Gatekeeper, Naamoos and Themaxwecan.
Juvenile The Gatekeeper got the ball rolling with a two-length success in the 5f novice contest before Eton College collared Marshal Dan on the line in the 7f handicap under Franny Norton.
Curtis then edged out Norton in the finish to the Royal Mile as Naamoos led home Forest Falcon for a stable 1-2.
"It's a great day for the Johnstons and nice to ride three winners for them," Curtis said. "Numbers speak volumes in this game and it's brilliant to start things off on the right foot this early in the turf season."
Hart excels on Jabbarockie
Jason Hart executed a brilliant front-running ride on Jabbarockie, who clung on for victory in three-way finish to the Scottish Sprint Cup.
Hart anticipated the break to grab the stands' side rail and had enough in reserve on the Eric Alston-trained eight-year-old, who is part-owned by former footballer Kevin Sheedy, to repel Zarzyni and Came From The Dark.
First runners
Harvey Bastiman sent out his first runners since taking over the family stable near Wetherby following the death of his sister Rebecca at the age of 40 last month.
Stable star Hayadh finished sixth in the 7f handicap, while Victory Angel was fourth in the Scottish Sprint Cup at a track where Rebecca had her most winners.
