The dramatic moment when Adam Kirby and brave Adayar secured Derby glory
Adam Kirby and Adayar may have crossed the line four and a half lengths clear of the field in the Cazoo Derby, but Epsom's unique configuration can so often lead to hard luck stories.
Kirby and his willing partner displayed skill and tenacity in equal measure when darting up a gap on the rail, a move that helped them pull clear of the field. Here, we show how events unfolded in the home straight.
Kirby (red cap) spots a gap on the inside of the frontrunning Gear Up (maroon and yellow stripes, leading).
He quickly pushes Adayar into the small space against the rail, forcing his way into contention.
The gap is now just Adayar-sized, and Kirby has taken full advantage, getting to within a head of Gear Up.
What they said
Adam Kirby: "There was just enough room up the rail, and I thought if I could just get in I could help them make their minds up, so I got in; luckily the horse was brave enough to go through with it and galloped up to the line and out through it. It's a marvellous day. I hope my mother was watching!"
