Superstars are humbled on Trials day - but what about the winners?

On an afternoon of exceptional entertainment, there were trials and tribulations. Favourites floundered on the chilly Cheltenham turf as established superstars, human and equine, suffered defeats that were unexpected and comprehensive. The losers were indeed notable but – and I smile as I write this – what about the winners.

When you have witnessed Editeur Du Gite and Edwardstone scrapping up that incredible hill, seen Ahoy Senor remind us of his brilliance in a most wonderfully absorbing contest and then beamed at the delight of Gold Tweet's ecstatic French entourage, it becomes hard to know where to start.

You do, however, have to start somewhere, and this particular story begins just outside the weighing room.
