'Something special' - Sakheer the star of 34,838-1 seven-timer for Roger Varian
Saturday: Mill Reef Stakes, Newbury
Roger Varian does not give much away, but it was impossible to miss the pride he took in saddling seven winners at combined odds of 34,838-1 across three meetings, a haul that was headlined by the sparkling Sakheer in the Mill Reef.
The Dubai Duty Free-sponsored Group 2 could do with producing another star and Varian feels he has one of those on his hands in the Zoffany juvenile, who was way too good for his rivals.
That was also the case in division one of the 7f novice, which went to stablemate Exoplanet, while Mitbaahy won the card's Group 3 sprint. Dusky Lord (Ayr), Royal Champion (Ayr), Al Husn (Newmarket) and Aimeric (Ayr) were the other winners for the scorching-hot yard from 12 runners on the day.
The promising colt is as short as 7-1 for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas next year, although Paddy Power and Betfair are twice that price.
"We're having a good day, but it's not always like that," said Varian, once a jump jockey but now a top Newmarket trainer.
"I'm delighted and you never expect for it to go how it's gone so far, but we ran some nice horses. There are big fields and the racing is competitive, but everything is clicking and it doesn't usually happen like that.
"The horses look well and the team are doing a great job at home. We've got some lovely horses and great owners, so have a lot of support and, when you get that, every now and then a day like this is possible."
Turning his attention to Sakheer, Varian, whose Charyn was third in the Mill Reef, added: "He looks good, doesn't he? His work's always been very good and I thought he'd go to Windsor and win first time out, so the filly [Magical Sunset] who beat him must be good, although he was a bit green. He won well at Haydock, but you never know coming into these Group races, which are different to beating up a novice field.
"What can I say, he looks good. The Middle Park is only next week, so let's not rule anything in or out. He's got size and scope so looks like a horse who will train on. He's very exciting and he's won over six furlongs, but I think he'll stay seven furlongs and maybe a mile.
"He's relaxing well and wasn't stopping at the line. We'll enjoy him and it's harder to imagine if I've got a better two-year-old, although we've some nice ones."
Egan, who rode Eldar Eldarov to Classic glory at Doncaster last week, went one better than Varian with four winners at Newbury, capturing the 1m3f Group 3 on the Hughie Morrison-trained Stay Alert as well.
"I'll just keep riding that crest of a wave and keep taking every opportunity," he said. "It's been a great day and hopefully there are more of these to come.
"I knew I had a good book of rides, but Sakheer was the main one – I was quietly confident he could be something special and he might just be."
Elaborating further, Egan added: "He's always pleased in his work and is quite exuberant at home. It's nice to see him improve with every start. He was green on debut and took big step forward to win at Haydock last time and it's another similar step today.
"The way he hit the line, I think he could get seven furlongs for sure. I got him in a lovely rhythm and the race just went smoothly. The world is his oyster."
