Sun shines on Summerghand as Oxted has to settle for second in the Abernant
Veteran sprinter Summerghand added a first win at Group level to his expansive CV on his 52nd start, causing an upset in the process as odds-on favourite Oxted had to settle for second in the Abernant Stakes.
A regular in big-field handicaps, the David O'Meara-trained seven-year-old is often a hostage to fortune when held up in his races but he struck late and decisively on this occasion to land the Group 3 contest.
"It wouldn't surprise me if he's getting better with age," said winning rider Danny Tudhope. "The way the race panned out was perfect; he loves having cover and passing horses. He likes something to aim at but in the big handicaps it just never fell right for him."
Roger Teal could not hide his disappointment after last season's July Cup winner Oxted failed by three-quarters of a length but is confident he can bounce back.
"Ryan Moore said he probably should have held on to him for another 100 yards or so, but it probably wasn't all that and the trip to Saudi might just have taken the edge off for the moment," said Teal, who is not adverse to dropping back to five furlongs at some stage this season.
"I'm disappointed we didn't win but every horse gets beat and we can get him back."
Bellosa lands gamble
Jane Chapple-Hyam admitted her team may have "had a nibble" after Bellosa landed quite a gamble for her Newmarket yard when making a winning debut in the 7f maiden for three-year-old fillies.
The winner opened at 25-1 with bet365 on Wednesday but returned after a seven-length success as the 7-2 joint-favourite following sustained support.
"I'm sure all the lads had a nibble," said a delighted Chapple-Hyam. "They all look pretty happy over there, so I would say so."
Asked if she had expected her to win quite so impressively, she added: "No. I knew she was good enough to hit the line but she was taking on horses who have run before, so that shows her class.
"She used the round gallop on the Limekilns for her last piece of work and she was impressive when she went past a good servant of mine, Ambassadorial, and I knew then we had a good one."
The Sir Edmund Loder-owned winner is likely to step into Listed company on her next start, according to Chapple-Hyam, who reported Saffron Beach to have bounced out of her second-place finish in Wednesday's Nell Gwyn Stakes and will head to the Qipco 1,000 Guineas next.
Treble heights
Creative Force initiated a treble on the card for Charlie Appleby and William Buick when returning from a 299-day absence to land the 6f handicap.
Not seen in action since finishing down the field in last year's Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, Creative Force finished like a train to make a winning comeback and could possibly head for the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes next.
After success in the Craven with Master Of The Seas, the Godolphin team made it three on the day when Al Waqidi scored in the 1m2f novice stakes.
